Inventory Basics

The inventory is accessed by clicking on the Inventory item from the main screen.  To go back to the main screen, simply select the back item from the navigation pane.

Inventory is the contents of SLIMS database.  Each inventory item is given a unique ID which is used to identify the item.  For example, the Administrator is a person object that exists for every database.  To find out what the id of the Administrator is,  select the people item from the navigation menu.  This assumes you are already in the inventory section.  A window like the following should appear:

People View

The center window now shows the view for the selected inventory object.  Each database object is shown as a row in a table.  Each column indicates some property of the object.  These properties are also known as fields.

Some views have unique commands, such as adding compounds to the database or adding dilution plate templates.  All views allow searching to find specific data or sorting to provide a sorted view of the data.

You can modify data in an inventory view, but this should be done with care.  Many fields are difficult to edit in this fashion especially fields that contain the ids of other objects in the database.  In some cases, the proper ID will have to be found in the database and copied into the appropriate field.

To add a new data item to a table, click on the add button.  A new ID will automatically be generated and a blank row will appear in the table.  At this point you will not be able to leave the view until you click the commit button or rollback button.

Click the commit button to add your changes to the database.
Click the rollback button to remove your changes from the database.
You will not be able to leave the view until you have committed or rolled back your changes.
