Plates

Plate are containers for compounds and other reagents.  Plates are plastic rectangles containing multiple wells that hold small quantities of reagent, compounds, wells and so on.

In addition to the object id, SLIMS tracks all plates through a barcode which must be unique across all plates.  Each plate keeps a reference to compounds and other reagents stored in the plate.

Each plate is defined by its platetype.  By default, SLIMS supports three types of plates
  1. 1536 well plates (32 rows, 48 columns)
  2. 384 well plates (16 rows, 24 columns)
  3. 96 well plates (8 rows, 12 columns)
Plates of any size can be added to slims.  Some plates have different properties than others, for example some plates have opaque bottoms and some have translucent bottoms.  If these are particularly important for your protocol, you should define these in the platetype inventory screen.

Additionally, each plate may have a parent_plate identifier.  If a plate has such an identifier, it automatically records all of the reagents, compounds and so on from the parent plate.  This means if a the parent plate of plate B has compound X in well B5 then the plate B will also contain compound X.  This is used primarily for reformating plates from mother to daughter for instance.

Double clicking on the wells entry in the plate view will show all of the batches contained within the plate.  You may have to navigate to the mother plate for the compound list since only new compounds are specified for daughter plates.


Available Commands
Make Dilution Protocol - Makes a dilution protocol that can be used to create and add dilution plates to the database.  Dilution protocols are also known as hitlist_protocols.

Add Dilution Series Plates - This uses a dilution series or hitlist protocol to add plates to the database.  To create a dilution series plate you must specify both the protocol to use and the compounds.  A tutorial is available to step you through this process.

Reformat - This opens up a wizard that helps you reformat plates.  Plates can be transferred from 96 well plates to 384 well plates or simply copied from one plate to another. Before you reformat plates, you should have a list of the target and destination barcodes.  See here for more instructions.

Show Contents - Visually shows the contents of the plates.  This retrieves the batch information and the batch contents along with the plate and well locations for perusal.

Add - Add a plate to the database.  You will need to update the barcode before committing the plate.  There is currently no easy way to specify contents of a plate.  This will be fixed in release candidate 3.
